Indian superstar and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist in javelin throw Neeraj Chopra made a stunning comeback from injury on Friday (June 26) and created history by becoming the first Indian to clinch a Diamond League title. The 24-year-old Indian’s first throw of 89.04 metres was enough for him to seal the deal at the Lausanne Diamond League and earn him a spot for the finals in Zurich.

Neeraj last competed in the World Championships in Eugene last month, where he wrote history by becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to win a silver medal. He didn’t participate in the Commonwealth Games, which took place in Birmingham due to fitness issues, and only made a comeback on Friday, in which he created a new record.

Neeraj’s victory in Lausanne not only helped him seal the crown in Switzerland but also made sure that he qualifies for the Diamond League finals, which will take place in Zurich on September 7. India’s golden boy also qualified for the 2023 World Championship in Budapest. Chopra qualified for the tournament by breaching the 85.20 metre qualifying mark on his first attempt.

Chopra started the day with a throw of 89.04 metres, which is also his third-best effort of all time. His second throw measured 85.18 metres. He passed on his third and fifth attempts, while his fourth throw was a foul. Chopra hurled the spear 80.04 metres in his sixth attempt. Chopra had finished second in the Stockholm leg of the tournament. Tokyo Olympics, silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch finished second with his best throw of 85.88 metres. Curtis Thompson of the United States was third with a best throw of 83.72 metres.

With his triumph, the army-man from Haryana became only the second Indian to finish in the top-three in the Diamond League. Before him, discus thrower Vikas Gowda was the only athlete from the country to achieve this feat. He finished second twice in New York in 2012 and in Doha in 2014, while he came third on two occasions—Shanghai and Eugene in 2015.
