MOSCOW, Russia: The deployment of long-range US missiles in Germany marks a significant escalation in geopolitical tensions, reminiscent of the Cold War era.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has vehemently opposed this move, warning of targeting European capitals in response.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized Russia’s capability to counter these missiles but expressed concern over potential threats to European cities.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov condemned NATO and the US, accusing them of intimidation tactics and promising a military response to what Moscow perceives as a new threat. The deployment includes Tomahawk cruise and SM-6 missiles, previously banned under a 1988 treaty that Putin breached in 2014.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius acknowledged the deployment’s implications, suggesting it underscores Europe’s need to bolster its defence capabilities independently. The situation highlights heightened tensions and the strategic significance of missile deployments in current global security dynamics.
