UConn women’s basketball great Breanna Stewart becomes mother of two, welcomes baby boy

Stewart and her wife Marta Xargay welcomed their second child into the world on Oct. 25. Stewart announced the birth of their son Theo Josep Stewart Xargay on Instagram with the caption: “Welcome to the world little man.” The two welcomed their daughter, Ruby, in August 2021.
While the couple used a surrogate to carry Ruby, Xargay carried Theo herself. Stewart announced the news of their pregnancy back on Mother’s Day in May.
Ruby was born days after Stewart helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Theo was born within a week of Stewart helping the New York Liberty reach the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2002.
Theo will likely become a staple in the stands during Stewart’s games just as Ruby has. Stewart dedicated her second signature shoe to her daughter this past spring with the ‘Stewie 2 Ruby.’ The Puma-designed shoes are colored ruby red and have Ruby’s birthday written on them.
“I have a lot of young kids looking up to me, but now I have Ruby, you know, who’s like literally looking up to every, every single thing that I do,” Stewart told CT Insider during the summer. “I realize that no matter what I do with my platform, I have the ability to kind of make an impact so that as she gets older, she can do whatever she wants.”
Stewart, who led UConn to four-straight national championships from 2012-2016, is coming off her first season playing for the Liberty. After playing her first seven years in the WNBA in Seattle, the former Husky signed with New York for its larger market and to be closer to her family in North Syracuse.
The move paid off as Stewart not only became the franchise’s first-ever WNBA MVP but also led the team to its first Finals appearance since 2002. New York fell 3-1 to Las Vegas this week in the Finals as the Aces became the first WNBA team to win back-to-back championships since 2001-02 (Los Angeles).
Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb announced Friday during the team’s exit interviews that the franchise will “100 %” core Stewart, meaning New York will offer her a one-year, super-max deal (both the team and player can always negotiate a longer-term contract with a core designated as well).
Stewart said she’s excited to stay in New York and looks forward to getting more involved with the community this offseason before she heads overseas.
