A new report may be shedding some light on the upcoming sequel to the horror movie Smile. A synopsis has also been shared, though none of this information has been officially announced as of this time.
According to film industry scooper Daniel Richtman, the Smile sequel will be titled Smile Deluxe. Richtman reports that the film will follow a “young woman who, after witnessing the death of a friend, is terrorized by a malevolent supernatural force, causing her to question reality as horrifying occurrences grow stronger each day.” Parker Finn returns to direct, while the sequel will star Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, and returning Smile actor Kyle Gallner.

Released in 2022, Smile was a huge hit at the box office. It earned more than $217 million worldwide against a budget of $17 million. Originally, the movie was set to be given a streaming release, but overwhelmingly positive test screenings resulted in the film getting a theatrical run instead. The film’s success led to the announcement of a sequel, and filming began on Smile 2, or Smile Deluxe, in April 2023.
Parker Finn Continues the Smile Story in the Sequel
“I was beyond grateful just for the opportunity to get to make a film for a studio who believed in me and this project enough to greenlight us and let us make it,” filmmaker Parker Finn previously told CBR about making Smile and its subsequent success. “When the decision happened to go with a theatrical wide release, that was definitely a pinch-me moment. I love the big screen, big sound, and communal experience; that’s how I fell in love with movies. Watching movies at home is also amazing. Some of my favorite films I watched at home for the first time, and they still became my favorite films, but getting to do it theatrical was totally a dream come true.”

Finn continued, “Having audiences respond to the film in the way that they have, the connection they seem to have with it, and the way that they’ve embraced it. That’s been far and away and the most satisfying part of the whole experience. The whole point is to make movies for audiences, and hopefully, I’ll be able to keep doing that!”
Smile starred Sosie Bacon, Kyle Gallner, Jessie T. Usher, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan. It was based on the original horror short, Laura Hasn’t Slep, which was by Finn. In the film, Bacon plays a therapist who begins experiencing freaky horrors she can’t explain after witnessing a traumatic incident.
The Smile sequel will be released on Oct. 18, 2024.
