Gove calls on Rayner to publish advice received amid ‘big question’ over council house sale

We reported earlier this morning that Angela Rayner has said she will not publish the “personal tax advice” she received on the sale of her council house.

This is despite police confirming they are “reassessing” their initial decision not to investigate allegations made about her living arrangements.

Labour’s deputy leader told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme she was “confident” she had done “absolutely nothing wrong” with regards to the sale of her council house and whether she should have paid capital gains tax on it (more here).

Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove has told broadcasters that he has “a lot of admiration for Angela Rayner”.

But he said that “the only way” she can “resolve this ongoing question is to public her legal advice, to publish her tax details, and to put an end to the speculation”.

“Unless and until she does, she will still be dogged by this speculation and these questions.

“It’s in her interests, the Labour Party’s interests, and the country’s interests that she levels and answers the really serious questions that have been put to her.”

Mr Gove said he would “of course” be willing to publish personal tax or legal advice if there were a “big question” over some aspect of his affairs.

He added: “Personally speaking, I’m sure Angela Rayner has done nothing wrong, but it’s in her interests to clear this mess up.”

Mr Gove also said Sir Keir Starmer should “instruct” his deputy to publish the relevant advice.

Speaking to journalists this morning, the Labour leader said he is “satisfied” that Ms Rayner has “not broken any rules”, and that she “shouldn’t” put advice on personal affairs in the public domain (see post at 10.58).
