LEWISTON (WGME) — Pamela Smart, the New Hampshire woman who had her teenage lover murder her husband, is now taking full responsibility for the first time in more than 30 years.

In 1990, Smart was a 22-year-old high school media coordinator when she began an affair with a 15-year-old boy.

She had him shoot and kill her husband, Gregory Smart.

The shooter was released from prison in 2015.

Smart is serving a life sentence without parole.

Tuesday, Smart released a video statement taking full responsibility.

“I had deflected blame all the time, I think almost as a coping mechanism, because the truth of being so responsible was very difficult for me, because I’m not a person who went through life hurting other people,” Smart said.

The video statement is part of Smart’s request for a sentence reduction.

She’s serving time in New York, but hopes to meet with New Hampshire’s governor, the only person who can commute her sentence.
