Matsumoto Castle is one of the iconic sights-to-see in Japan and it likely attracted a record number of tourists from overseas in the year through March.

Authorities in Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture estimate around 160,000 overseas travelers visited the castle in central Japan. That’s up more than 20,000 from the record set in fiscal 2019.

The city used social media platforms to attract more tourists to the castle, which is designated as a national treasure.

Many western tourists enjoyed the scenery of the castle and cherry blossoms on Wednesday.

A woman from Germany said that the castle is really beautiful and “it is a good trip to be here.”

City officials say they are now looking at measures to ease congestion at the castle to make a visit more enjoyable.
