One dead after car and CTrain collide at Deerfoot-Memorial interchange

One person has died after a crash involving a car and a CTrain Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the Memorial Drive-Deerfoot Trail interchange around 11:40 a.m. after a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu was struck by a light-rail train, say Calgary police and fire officials.

The vehicle went down an embankment due to the collision and came to rest on CPKC railway tracks next to the highway interchange, officials said.

CPR was started at the scene, according to a statement from Carol Henke, public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department,

The driver of the vehicle, a 79-year-old man, was declared dead at the scene, police said in a statement issued late Friday, while the passenger, a woman in her 70s, sustained minor injuries.

Two firefighters accompanied the patient to the hospital, Henke said.

Rescuers were observed cutting through the wreckage to free the driver, with responders performing life-saving procedures for some time afterward.

The passenger was seen being led away from the crashed vehicle by rescuers, walking with assistance but under her own power.

No one on the CTrain was injured and transit passengers aboard were transferred onto shuttle buses.

As of Friday night, it wasn’t known to police what caused the collision.
