Medics miss out on meeting the King – after being called on to treat guest

NHS medics on the Essex border who were invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace missed out on meeting King Charles – after they were called on to attend to an injured guest. Radiographer Oluwole Adeyiga – known as Baba – and senior nurse Sinead Skelton were waiting in line to meet the King but were called into action when a woman had her foot run over by a wheelchair.
The pair, from the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) were invited to the Palace in recognition of their positive impacts on their communities. Hard-working Baba impressively worked his way up over 12 years in the trust from humble beginnings as a porter to become a senior radiologist.
But despite their unforgettable experience, the pair were unable to cap it off by meeting King Charles. Whilst the queue to meet the monarch, the two NHS medics selflessly rushed off to help an injured guest who had her foot rolled over by a wheelchair.

However, the pair still gushed over the honour of attending the garden party on Wednesday last week (May 8). “When the national anthem played and King Charles and Queen Camilla came down the steps, it took my breath away,” proud Ms Skelton said.
“It was surreal… We were absolutely thrilled. Princess Anne, Edward and Sophie were there too. It was a real honour and a privilege to go, and it was so nice to go with Baba.”
“We kept saying to each other, ‘Can you believe we’re here?’. It was really surreal when we first walked through the Palace gates and under the balcony… it looks much smaller than it does on TV.”
“Then we were looking back out on the crowds outside thinking, ‘This is what it must be like for the Royal Family’. It’s something we’ll remember for a lifetime.”
Baba, who worked his way up from porter to radiologist at BHRUT via an apprenticeship, attended another event at the House of Commons earlier this year in recognition of his impressive success story. On his surreal visit to the Palace, he said: “It was a lovely experience and we met some wonderful people.”
“I wouldn’t change it for anything. It was awesome and I’m so thankful for the opportunity, and it’s all thanks to my apprenticeship journey. It was a special moment walking through the gates, and to be just a stone’s throw from the King. I’ve never been in the presence of anyone like that before.”
