Joanie Delgaco may be a very long shot to land a medal in rowing competition of the Paris Olympics, but how she performs in the quarterfinals of the women’s sculls on Tuesday could very well determine how far her career will go.

World Rowing coaching director Gianni Postiglione will be closely watching the Filipino ace, who could be offered an Olympic solidarity movement scholarship after Delgaco impressed a lot of international coaches in topping the repechage at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium to make the final 24. The core of the crack Philippine boxing delegation plunges into action in the Paris Olympics on Tuesday with Games first-timer Aira Villegas getting the team off on the right foot with a swashbuckling conquest of a Moroccan foe in the opening round of the women’s 50-kilogram division.

Villegas scored a 5-0 win over Yasmine Mouttaki at North Paris Arena in France on Monday, giving the rest of the team the jumpstart it needs as Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial climb the same ring looking to better performances that fell just short of the gold medal in Tokyo 2020.

The 28-year-old Villegas, who became emotional after the win, will be clashing with Algerian fighter Roumaysa Boualam, the second-seed, on Friday at 2 a.m. FULL STORY

Eumir Marcial meets ‘idol’ Golovkin at Paris Olympics

MANILA, Philippines—Eumir Marcial has yet to make his debut at the Paris Olympics 2024 but he already felt like a winner days before his opening bout.

Marcial on Monday ticked off an item on his bucket list after meeting one of his boxing heroes in former pound-for-pound king Gennady Golovkin at the Olympic Village in France.

“Look who I bumped into at the Olympic Village. The legendary and one of my favorite boxers in the history of the world of boxing,” Marcial wrote on his Instagram. FULL STORY
