Latest news: New Marriott in Detroit; Artemis acquires; Dolce debuts in Turkey

Marriott
adds in Detroit. Marriott International has signed a
deal for a 25-story, 600-key JW Marriott on Detroit’s waterfront near where Joe
Louis Arena once stood. Detroit-based Sterling Group is developing the $397
million new hotel project and has $142 million in development incentives from
the city and the state of Michigan. The JW Marriott Water Square is expected to
open in 2027 and will neighbor the recently opened 496-unit luxury apartment
tower, The Residences at Water Square.
Trinity expands team in Europe. Honolulu-based Trinity Investments has expanded its leadership team in Europe by naming Mai Kawashima as vice president of acquisitions, George Austin as director of strategic operations, Elia Antonioudaki as vice president of development, and Andrea Hendrick as vice president of finance.
Artemis acquires in Georgia.
Atlanta-based Artemis Hotel Group has acquired the 124-key Homewood Suites by
Hilton Atlanta-Galleria/Cumberland from an undisclosed buyer for an undisclosed
price. Artemis acquired the asset on June 24 and Hunter Hotel Advisors
represented the institutional seller on the transaction.
Wyndham opens first Dolce in Turkey.
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts is opening its first Dolce hotel in Turkey with
155-key Dolce by Wyndham Çeşme Alaçatı. The hotel is part of an expanded
partnership with the hotel’s owner and operator, İzmir, Turkey-based DRD
Hotels. Wyndham and DRD Hotels first partnered last year and opened two other
hotels today in Turkey, the 75-key La Quinta by Wyndham Çeşme and the 152-key
Wyndham Datça Perili Bay. Wyndham has 120 hotels in the country, with 25 more
in the pipeline.
California hotel available through bankruptcy. The 309-key Ontario Airport Hotel &
Conference Center in Ontario, California will be available through Chapter 11
bankruptcy sale on July 9. Northbrook, Illinois-based Hilco Real Estate Sales
is facilitating the sale.
Michigan hotel rebranding to Sonesta. The
Delta Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is rebranding to Sonesta, according to
its owner, Fargo, North Dakota-based Legendary Capital. Legendary has acquired
over 30 hotels and targets 80-200-key extended-stay as well as limited-, select- and full-service hotels in middle America.
Meliá reopens hotel after volcano
eruption. Meliá Hotels International will reopen
its Sol La Palma hotel in Puerto Naos in La Palma, Spain, in July, just 1,000
days after the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano, which triggered the largest
mass evacuation in La Palma history. The Sol La Palma hotel is built on an
ancient lava flow from the 1949 eruption of the San Juan volcano and is owned
by Madrid-based Atom Hoteles.
Marriott adds to Luxury Collection in
Australia. Marriott International signed an
agreement with Brisbane, Australia-based Makris Group for its first Luxury
Collection Resort in mainland Australia. The 122-key Marina Mirage Gold Coast
in Main Beach is scheduled to open in 2027.
IHCL adds Taj in Uttar Pradesh. Indian
Hotels Co. Ltd. (IHCL) has signed a partnership with JK Urbanscapes Developers
Ltd. for a new Taj-branded hotel in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The 150-key hotel
will be IHCL’s 26th in Uttar Pradesh, with an additional 13 under development.
OYO adds in Dubai.
Gurgaon, India-based budget hotel chain OYO is opening the its first luxury
hotel in Dubai with the Palette Royal Reflections Hotel and Spa. OYO has more
than 700 properties in the UEA, including 200 in Dubai.
