Britain’s King Charles has outlined the new Labour government’s policy priorities in Parliament, which include realizing economic growth and making a transition to renewable energy.
It is customary for the monarch to deliver the government’s priorities to mark the start of the Parliament.
The Labour Party ended 14 years of Conservative rule in the UK after marking a landslide election victory earlier this month.
King Charles on Wednesday set out what Britain’s new prime minister, Keir Starmer, plans to introduce. The speech began with the words “My government will govern in service to the country.”
The speech stressed that “securing economic growth will be a fundamental mission,” and that Starmer’s ministers will seek to accelerate the delivery of high-quality infrastructure and housing.
They are to also “improve the railways by reforming rail franchising, establishing Great British Railways and bringing train operators into public ownership.”
The government is “committed to a clean energy transition, which will lower energy bills for consumers over time.”
The king said a bill would be introduced to create Great British Energy, a “publicly owned clean power company.”
The previous government introduced a system that sent asylum seekers entering the UK illegally to Rwanda.
This policy is to be replaced by a bill to modernize the asylum and immigration system, by “establishing a new Border Security Command and delivering enhanced counterterror powers to tackle organized immigration crime.”
On the diplomatic front, Britain will continue to give its full support to Ukraine. It will seek to reset the relationship with the European Union, from which the UK withdrew four years ago, to promote trade.
