Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath announced Tuesday night that the Coast Guard’s search and rescue efforts for the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse will be suspended.

Six individuals are still unaccounted for.

“I would like to announce tonight that based on the length of time that we’ve gone in this search, the extensive search efforts that we’ve put into it, the water temperature — that at this point we do not believe that we are going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Gilreath said.

“And so this evening, at about 7:30 we are going to suspend the active search and rescue efforts.”

The announcement comes just hours after the individuals, who were construction workers at the collapse were presumed to be dead, according to Jeff Pritzker, executive vice president at Brawner Builders.

Despite calling off search and rescue efforts, Gilreath said there will still be a Coast Guard and their partners’ presence at the scene, stating that they will be “transitioning into a different phase” of action.

Gilreath also thanked the community for their “outpouring of support,” as well as the efforts made by first responders.

He also thanked the community for their prayers for the families of the six individuals who are presumed to be dead.
