The Penticton Fire Department and Penticton Indian Band Fire Department were dispatched for a burning complaint at a homeless encampment on Hwy 97 north of Redwing just after 5:40 p.m. today.
According to Penticton Firefighter Ryan Hviston, Penticton Engine 204 responded with 4 firefighters and observed a column of black smoke in the area.
“Upon arrival, crews encountered an approximately 40’x30’ fire in the encampment and surrounding trees. Penticton Fire crews were able to quickly prevent the fire from spreading, and command was transferred to Penticton Indian Band Fire Department upon their arrival,” said a written statement.
All camp occupants were evacuated from the area, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Multiple reports of a fire on the west side of Highway 97 have been seen coming into Penticton Saturday night.
The fire appears to be in brush near Sage Mesa Drive.
One traveller reported seeing lots of flames and heavy smoke.
One firetruck and one Penticton Fire Department pickup are currently on scene, along with one police vehicle.
