Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Tex.) became the first House Democrat to call for President Biden to step aside as the party’s presidential candidate Tuesday, but he was hardly the only voice sharing concern about the fallout from the president’s much-criticized debate performance, in which Biden spoke with a raspy voice and sometimes appeared to lose his train of thought. Hours after former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told MSNBC that it was “essential” for Biden to give a “no-holds-barred” interview to reassure the public about his fitness, the White House announced the president would tape an interview Friday with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos — along with other events added to his schedule.
