DSWD DROMIC Report #62 on the Effects of El Niño as of 14 May 2024, 6AM – Philippines

I. Situation Overview

From July 2023 to April 2024, El Niño conditions were observed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. By May 2024, El Niño across the tropical Pacific Ocean continues to weaken but impacts such as hotter and drier conditions still persist. A transition to ENSOneutral conditions is anticipated during the April-May-June (AMJ) to May-June-July (MJJ) 2024 season. However, a likelihood for La Niña to develop during the JuneJuly-August (JJA) 2024 season has a 60% chance. With these conditions, the PAGASA ENSO Alert and Warning System still remains at El Niño Advisory / La Niña Watch.

The effects of El Niño were felt in the Philippines, with conditions leading to agricultural damage and water shortages reported in various Regions.

II. Status of Affected Areas and Population

A total of 1,038,113 families or 4,233,945 persons are affected in 5,176 barangays in Regions I, II, III, MIMAROPA, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, CAR, and BARMM (see Annex A).
