TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China has offered Taiwan disaster relief assistance following a 7.2 magnitude that struck the country’s east coast on Wednesday (April 3).
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said it is concerned about the earthquake reports and that assistance is available if needed per UDN. Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian (朱鳳蓮) said the office will pay close attention to developments.
The earthquake that struck near Hualien was the strongest in Taiwan in 25 years, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said in a press conference. At least one death has been reported and more than 50 injured.
Taiwanese authorities said that at least 26 buildings have collapsed in Hualien, with other reports of damage around the country. The CWA said aftershocks are likely to continue for up to four days.
