BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – The Butte County Department of Public Health announced that a person visiting Chico from another county is confirmed to have Neisseria meningitis.

Neisseria meningitis is a bacteria that causes a life-threatening disease called meningococcal disease, the BDPH said.

The person went to multiple parties at local fraternity houses in April from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and then again on April 13 between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., the BCPH said. This person attended the following fraternity houses: Lambda, Phi Tau, Theta Chi and K-Sig in downtown Chico.

People who attended these parties during the same time as the person who has Neisseria meningitis should contact the student health center or their primary healthcare provider and inform them of their possible exposure, the BCPH said.

Neisseria meningitis can be spread from person to person by coughing or coming into close contact with someone who is sick or is carrying the bacteria.

Students can access emergency alerts and updates from Chico State University here.
