Broadcast options for Celtic supporters vs Ross County amid TV blackout today

[ad_1]

Celtic supporters in the UK & Ireland will be reduced to audio commentary as the only legitimate means of getting live updates from Dingwall today as the Bhoys play Ross County, unless you are lucky enough to have a ticket.

Sky Sports opted not to select today’s game for live coverage and the SPFL have decided not to pursue pay-per-view streams this season following a couple of progressive years on that front owing to the pandemic.

With an away allocation of less than 2,000 from Ross County, it means tens of thousands of regularly paying Celtic supporters are effectively shut out from contributing in any meaningful way to Scottish football this weekend.

Celtic TV are carrying live audio commentary to subscribers on these shores, although those signed up to the service overseas will get the full live video.

BBC Radio Scotland will also be carrying live commentary.

Many will argue there are other, less legitimate methods of watching the game. However, VPNs are against the terms and conditions of a Celtic TV subscription and accessing copyrighted material via other subscriptions is a minefield we can’t really advertise or get into here.

It’s beside the point anyway. In 2022, we should have a user-friendly, cost-effective way of contributing to Scottish football regardless of the time of kick-off or TV deal circumstances.

When the SPFL are negotiating offers for the broadcast rights from 2025 onwards, they need to ensure clubs have the flexibility to broadcast their own matches to their own fans, so avoidable situations such as this don’t come up.

The 3pm Saturday football blackout is archaic and needs to change too. The SPFL and SFA should be leading the way on ensuring this is permanently changed. It is often assumed this is law, but it’s not, the SFA voluntarily sign up to the UEFA mandate. [Grant Russell]

It’s not just a Celtic issue, it impacts supporters of all teams, with Partick Thistle complaining just through the week, as an example.

Ultimately it’s absurd that it’s easier to follow Celtic in Australia, Tokyo or San Francisco today than it is in Scotland, and with supporters undoubtedly rushing to go outside of the margins to find live video coverage by any means possible, the league is only pushing people away into the services they’re fighting against.
