Dollar slides to over two-month low as Fed cut bets take charge
The dollar index bottomed out at 103.53 during Asian trade, its weakest level since Sept. 1, extending its nearly 2% decline from last week – the sharpest weekly fall since July.
Against the weaker greenback, the euro hit its highest since August at $1.0937, while the yen firmed at a 5-1/2 week high of 148.63 per dollar.

Tech View: Nifty showing range-bound mood. What traders should do on Tuesday
The short-term trend of Nifty continues to be range- bound. There is a possibility of some more consolidation or minor weakness in the short term before showing upside bounce from the lows. Immediate support is placed around 19600-19550 levels, said Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities.
Open Interest (OI) data shows that on the call side highest OI was at 19,800, followed by 19,900 strike prices. On the put side, the highest OI was recorded at 19,600 strike price.
The rupee exhibited weakness at 83.35 with a decline of 0.10rs. Over the past four sessions, the rupee has experienced a decrease of more than 0.35rs from the swing highs observed around 82.93 on November 14, 2023. This downturn is attributed to the absence of sustained RBI intervention and the rupee’s inability to show signs of a trend-based rally after an extended period of sideways movement. With uncertainty surrounding FII data and the volatility of crude prices, the rupee’s range is anticipated to be between 83.20 and 83.50.

Elevated long-term interest rate trends and a weakening global economy continue to hurt inflows and market movement. While the recent softening of inflation in the US & India and the negative trend of crude are expected to help the view on global equity and India in the short term. In that context, the ease in FIIs selling is helping the domestic markets but continues to consolidate primarily due to India’s premium valuation relative to global peers. In this scenario, the IT sector is benefiting; however, valuation continues to be on the higher side compared to long-term history, suggesting a cautious approach in the sector in the medium term.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: World shares mixed after Wall Street’s 3rd straight winning week
World shares were mixed on Monday after Wall Street closed its third straight winning week with a tiny gain. In share trading, Germany’s DAX fell 0.1% to 15,907.92 and the CAC 40 in Paris gained 0.3% to 7,256.93. Britain’s FTSE 100 was down 0.3% at 7,481.86. The future for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were virtually changed.

Indian pvt banks make largest single-day govt bond purchase in 7 years
Indian private sector banks made the largest single-session purchase of government bonds in seven years on Friday, including a big investment on behalf of a corporate, traders said. These banks bought bonds worth a net of 83.43 billion rupees ($1 billion), the biggest such purchase since Nov. 15, 2016, as per data from Clearing Corp of India. This pushed overall buying to above 200 billion rupees for November, after net sales of 101 billion rupees in October.

The ongoing rally in the mother market US triggered by declining bond yields makes the market construct slightly favourable for the continuation of the rally in India, too. Like in cricket, there will be occasional set backs, but it is the long-term trend that matters in the market. Clearly, this is a buy on dips market. Retail investor exuberance is pushing up the broader market. Investors should not be blinded by the recency bias and chase small caps running away without fundamental support. In spite of recent underperformance, safety is now in large caps. Since FIIs turned buyers in the cash market on two days recently, they are unlikely to sell big and may again buy on favourable developments. There is momentum in large-cap IT stocks. The expectation that US will not tip into a sharp recession has improved the prospects for IT. Autos, telecom, capital goods and construction-related segments are likely to remain resilient. Banking stocks bouncing back is only a matter of time.

Rupee likely to inch up on more dollar losses; eyes oil prices
Non-deliverable forwards indicate rupee will open at around 83.24-83.25 to the U.S. dollar, compared with 83.27 in the previous session. Brent crude rose in Asia trading, adding to the 4% rally on expectations of OPEC+ deepening supply cuts.
The rupee last week was not able to take much advantage of the slump in the dollar and the fall in U.S. yields on bets of the Federal Reserve likely opting for interest rate cuts in May 2024.
