Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes near Tokyo, Japan
4.0 quake 3 Sep 11:54 am (GMT +9)
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Tokyo, Japan, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 56 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, at 11:54 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yashio (pop. 81,300) located 3 km from the epicenter, Sōka (pop. 231,400) 4 km away, Matsudo (pop. 470,300) 8 km away, Hatogaya-honchō (pop. 53,100) 8 km away, Kawaguchi (pop. 468,600) 10 km away, Koshigaya (pop. 317,400) 10 km away, Shimotoda (pop. 118,700) 12 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 17 km away, Saitama (pop. 1,193,400) 19 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 44 km away.
If you did NOT feel the quake although you were in the area, please report it! Your contribution is valuable to earthquake science, seismic hazard analysis and mitigation efforts. You can use your device location or the map to indicate where you were during the earthquake. Thank you!
