SC allows ex-Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra’s wife to move trial court for bail in ED case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed former Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra’s wife Preeti Chandra, lodged in Tihar Jail in a money laundering case, to move to a trial court for bail after her interrogation is over in the case. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and M R Shah said that her bail application should be decided by the trial court on its merit without being influenced by the orders of the top court. The top court noted that an Additional Sessions Judge in Patiala House Court had on August 8, granted permission to the Enforcement Directorate to interrogate Preeti Chandra for three days within a period of 40 days in the case.

Assam raises daily wage for tea workers

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government has raised the daily wage for tea garden workers by Rs 27, over and above other benefits they are entitled to. Post the revision, tea workers in Assam’s Barak valley will get Rs 210 per day and for that of Brahmaputra valley at Rs 232. Assam accounts for around half of India’s overall tea production. India as a whole contributes 23 percent to the global tea output.

Paddy sowing down 13% this kharif season, monsoon played spoilsport

Farmers in India have sown less paddy this Kharif season. Going by the latest acreage data, the area under paddy cultivation is over 13 per cent lower than the previous Kharif season. Kharif crops are mostly sown during monsoon -June and July, and the produce is harvested during October and November. As of July 29, farmers have sown paddy across 23.15 million hectares in comparison to 26.70 million hectares in the previous season.

9 Indian fishermen arrested for trespassing in Sri Lankan waters

A total of nine fishermen travelling in a boat from the coastal district of Tamil Nadu have been arrested for trespassing and fishing in Sri Lankan waters. Rameswaram Police said the arrested fishermen from Nagapattinam are being taken to Trincomalee port. More information is awaited in this regard.

I-T dept seizes ‘black’ assets of over Rs 9 Cr after raids on MP mining, liquor group

The Income Tax Department has seized “undeclared assets” worth more than Rs 9 crore after it recently raided a Madhya Pradesh-based business group engaged in mining and manufacture of liquor, the CBDT said on Wednesday. The raids were launched on July 14 on the premises of the group located in the state and some in Mumbai. The CBDT statement said analysis of seized data of sand mining business shows that the group has been “indulging in tax evasion by not recording sales in the regular books of account”.

HC directs UIDAI to provide NIA with documents of 12 alleged Bangla nationals

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to provide the National Investigation Agency (NIA) with documents or copies of the documents submitted by 12 alleged Bangladeshi nationals to obtain Aadhaar cards. All the 12 accused are currently in custody in the Parappana Agrahara central prison. The single judge bench of Justice Krishna S Dixit in its judgement said that since the allegation is of these persons having obtained Aadhaar card by fraud, forgery and fabrication, “then the documents for information for which the petitioner has sought for from respondent have to be parted with to the petitioner or at least the copies.”

Russian authorities on Wednesday raided the home of a former state TV journalist who quit after making an on-air protest against Moscow’s war in Ukraine, and launched a criminal case against her on the charge of spreading false information about the Russian armed forces, her lawyer said on social media. The case against Marina Ovsyannikova was launched under a law, enacted after the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, that penalizes statements against the military, lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov said. A conviction is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

The Centre on Wednesday released two instalments of tax devolution totalling Rs 1.16 lakh crore to states. This is in line with the commitment of the government to strengthen the hands of states to accelerate their capital and developmental expenditure, a finance ministry statement said. “The Union Government has released two instalments of tax devolution to State Governments amounting to Rs 1,16,665.75 crore on 10th August, 2022, as against normal monthly devolution of Rs 58,332.86 crore,” it said.

Coal India Q1 profit almost triples to Rs 8,833 cr

Coal India Ltd on Wednesday reported almost three-fold rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 8,832.86 crore for June quarter 2022-23 on the back of higher sales. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 3,169.86 crore in the year-ago period, Coal India Ltd (CIL) said in a filing to BSE. Revenue from operations during April-June period increased to Rs 35,092.17 crore from Rs 25,282.75 crore in the year-ago quarter.

RBI issues strict norms for digital lending to curb malpractice

The RBI on Wednesday mandated that digital loans must be credited directly in the bank accounts of borrowers and not through any third party, as it put in place strict norms to curb rising malpractice in digital lending space. Besides, the Reserve Bank of India said digital lending entities and not the borrowers should pay fees or charges payable to Lending Service Providers (LSPs) in the credit intermediation process. Issuing a detailed set of guidelines for digital lending, the RBI mentioned about the concerns primarily related to unbridled engagement of third parties, mis-selling, breach of data privacy, unfair business conduct, charging of exorbitant interest rates, and unethical recovery practices.

Sensex, Nifty close almost flat; IT stocks weigh

Benchmark BSE Sensex and Nifty closed on a flat note on Wednesday as profit booking in IT and realty shares negated gains in metal and oil & gas stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex ended 35.78 points or 0.06 per cent lower at 58,817.29 in a volatile session. As many as 17 of its components ended in the red while 13 advanced. The broader NSE Nifty inched up 9.65 points or 0.06 per cent to close at 17,534.75.

Himachal Pradesh reports 526 COVID-19 cases, one death

Himachal Pradesh recorded 526 fresh COVID-19 cases and one fatality due to the disease on Wednesday, pushing the state’s infection tally to 3,06,269 and the death toll to 4,161, officials said. The count of active COVID-19 cases in the state now stands at 4,002, they said. On Wednesday, 4,703 samples were taken for testing, the officials said.

Tata Consumer Products Q1 profit up 38 pc to Rs 277 cr

Tata Consumer Products Ltd (TCPL) on Wednesday reported 38.2 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 276.72 crore for June quarter 2022-23. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 200.24 crore for April-June period a year ago, said TCPL, earlier known as Tata Global Beverages Ltd, in a BSE filing. Revenue from operations was up 10.58 per cent to Rs 3,326.83 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 3,008.46 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal year.

Bank of Baroda hikes lending rates by 5 to 20 basis points

Bank of Baroda on Wednesday hiked lending rates across various tenures by 5 to 20 basis points. In a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges, it said the revised interest rates would come into effect immediately. Separately, housing finance company HDFC on Tuesday increased its retail prime lending rate on housing loans by 25 basis points with immediate effect.

Bhima Koregaon case: SC grants bail to activist Varavara Rao

The Supreme Court granted regular bail to activist and poet Dr P Varavara Rao, an accused in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence case, on medical grounds. A bench headed by Justice UU Lalit while grating bail to Rao said that he shall not leave the jurisdiction of Greater Mumbai without permission from the Special NIA Court at the city, he shall not misuse his liberty and nor he shall be in touch with any of the witnesses.
