Coastal areas of India and Bangladesh have been battered by a powerful cyclone, the first of the year.
Local media say the storm killed at least 16 people in both countries.
Weather officials say Cyclone Remal moved north over the Bay of Bengal before making landfall on Sunday.
Media outlets say at least 10 people died in Bangladesh while 6 others were killed in India’s West Bengal state.
The strong winds and heavy rain caused extensive damage to housing and infrastructure in both countries. In Bangladesh, more than 30,000 homes were reportedly destroyed.
The UN children’s agency UNICEF in Bangladesh says “over 8.4 million people, including 3.2 million children, are at high health, nutrition, sanitation, and safety risks.”
