King hosts garden party with senior royals as Prince Harry to miss reunion

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been mobbed by fans in Nigeria after arriving in Lagos this morning. The pair posed for selfies, played with schoolchildren and joked with their teachers as they kicked off their three-day tour.

The trip follows Prince Harry’s brief return to the UK where he celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games – but did not see King Charles owing to a diary clash.

Harry and Meghan are in Nigeria for a whistle-stop tour to promote the games in Africa – and are expected to visit a school, meet injured service people and attend basketball and polo games before attending an evening gala.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, returned to the UK on Tuesday afternoon for a service at St Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate the Invictus milestone. A few miles away, Charles welcomed guests at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the year.

Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales has said his wife Kate is “doing well” following her cancer diagnosis as he visited the Isles of Scilly on Friday.

William was told about a new health and social care facility being built on Duchy land near the hospital. He said George, Charlotte and Louis were “very jealous” of his trip, and said he may bring them to Cornwall later in the year.

Meghan Markle says she ‘hung onto’ words from Princess Lilibet

The Duchess of Sussex made the revelation on a visit to Nigeria with Prince Harry to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his Invictus Games.

Their first port of call was a visit to a school, where Prince Harry gave a poignant speech to normalise mental health issues.

Meghan then opened up about their youngest child, telling the schoolchildren about a recent, memorable exchange.

“Our daughter, Lili, she’s much, much tinier than you guys,” Meghan said. “She’s about to turn three. And a few weeks ago she looked at me and she would just see the reflection in my eyes. And she [goes], ‘Mama, I see me in you.

“Oh, now she was talking really literally. But I hung onto those words in a very different way. And I thought, yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you.”

“As I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well.”

Meghan Markle praises Prince Harry on Nigeria visit

The Duchess of Sussex couldn’t help but gush about her husband after Harry encouraged the children to check on anyone in their class who wasn’t smiling because “it’s okay not to be okay.”

She said to the pupils: “Do you see why I married him? He’s so smart.”

Harry and Meghan praised for aiding soldiers’ recovery

They are set to meet the injured service people as part of a trip to Nigeria marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Nigerian defence spokesman Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, who confirmed today that the couple had arrived in the country, said their presence would be a much-needed morale booster.

“This engagement with Invictus is giving us the opportunity for the recovery of our soldiers,” he said.

Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games back in 2014 to give wounded, sick and injured service people a chance to showcase their sporting talents.

Prince Harry’s poignant words on mental health

While speaking to pupils about the issue, he empathised that it can be difficult when a person “lost a loved one in your family and you don’t know who to turn to or who to speak to.”

He told pupils at the Wuse Lightway Academy in Nigeria, which is supported by the Archwell Foundation, that there is “no shame to be able to acknowledge that today is a bad day.”

“In some cases around the world, in more than you would believe, there is a stigma when it comes to mental health,” he said.

“Too many people don’t want to talk about it, because it’s invisible – something in your mind that you can’t see. It’s not like a broken leg, it’s not like a broken wrist, it’s something we are still relatively unsure of.

“But guess what? Every single person in this room – the youngest, the oldest – every single person has mental health.”

The Duke of Sussex then encouraged the children to “look after yourselves to be able to look after other people, and other people have to be able to look after themselves to be able to look after you.”

Divide between Harry and the Windsors shown in its ‘deepest and starkest form’

The rift between Prince Harry and the Windsors was shown in its “deepest and starkest form” this week, a royal expert has claimed.

The Prince was supported by none of his immediate family at a thanksgiving service to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

He was, however, joined by members of his mother’s family, the Spencers – namely Lady Jane Fellowes and Earl Spencer, and former army officer Mark Dyer.

Former BBC royal correspondent Michael Cole said there “never was much love lost between the Spencers and the Windsors”

“Nothing could have illustrated more clearly the gap that will always separate two famous families,” he told the MailOnline.

“Words have power and actions have consequences, as Prince Harry – whose criticisms of his Windsor family have been harsh, cruel and wounding – is increasingly finding out.”

Cole then referred back to the life of Princess Diana, claiming that from the get-go, her father did not want her to marry the then-Prince Charles.

Instead, he advised his daughter to “follow the example of her oldest sister Sarah: marry a country landowner, live in a nice house, have children, be happy.”

Meghan Markle reveals she is of Nigerian descent

The Duchess of Sussex first made the revelation on her podcast Archetypes in 2022, where she said she made the discovery through a genealogy test.

The news was later referenced by Prince Harry at the 2023 opening ceremony for the Invictus Games.

“Now, I’m not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered she is of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year!” he said.

The couple are currently visiting Nigeria to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the sporting event, which Harry founded in 2014 to celebrate the abilities of wounded, injured and sick service people.

Harry and Meghan are staying in a £600-a-night Nigerian hotel

The couple flew to the country in a Boeing 777 after Meghan met Harry at Heathrow Airport following her decision to skip the UK celebrations of the 10th anniversary of his Invictus Games.

According to reports, they are staying at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, where the presidential suite costs £600 a night.

The five-star hotel has a pool, spa, and picturesque views of the mountains surrounding the Nigerian capital.

It is also in a top central location, allowing the couple to easily travel to the events they are set to attend on their three-day visit.
