Robert Vadra says ‘entire country’ wishes for me to join politics

Businessman and husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Robert Vadra, has said that the entire country wishes for him to get into active politics. His remark came amid buzz over his electoral debut from Amethi where BJP’s Smriti Irani is the sitting MP.
“The voice is coming from the entire country. They want me to get into active politics as I have always been among the people of the country. People always want me to be there in their region. I have campaigned there (Amethi) since 1999,” he said on Friday when asked if he would contest for Amethi.
Amethi has been a Congress stronghold. However, Robert Vadra’s brother-in-law and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lost the constituency to Irani by a big margin in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. There has been mystery over the seat as the grand old party is yet to announce a candidate from Amethi. This got bolstered on Saturday after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said at a press briefing to wait for a few more days to clear air regarding Amethi and Rae Bareli.
Robert Vadra further claimed that Congress is comfortably ahead of the BJP after the two phases of the Lok Sabha elections.
“People want change. They want to get rid of the BJP which is misusing the central agencies. People are with the Gandhi family as they are seeing the hard work put in by Rahul and Priyanka,” he said.
Earlier this month, Robert Vadra hinted at joining active politics, saying the people of Amethi expect him to make his political debut from the constituency. He, however, said that a decision on both Amethi and Rae Bareli would be taken by the Congress leadership.
Polling is scheduled in Amethi and Rae Bareli in the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
