Search efforts underway for two missing kayakers off Central Saanich

Multiple agencies are conducting a search for two men who went missing while kayaking near Central Saanich on Saturday.
Sidney/North Saanich RCMP say the two men were kayaking between Island View Beach and D’Arcy Island on April 20 and have not returned.
Daniel MacAlpine and Nicolas West were last known to be kayaking from D’Arcy Island to Island View Beach at 2:15 p.m. in a tandem teal blue kayak.

MacAlpine is described as a 36-year-old man, approximately 5’10” tall and 150 pounds. West is described as a 26-year-old man approximately 6’5″ tall and 170 pounds.
Sidney/North Saanich RCMP, Central Saanich Police, PEMO Search and Rescue, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and the Canadian Coast Guard are assisting with the search.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says it is leading the search for the kayakers.
“The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre has been leading and directing the ongoing search following two kayakers reported overdue yesterday afternoon near Island View Beach,” JRCC said in an email statement to CHEK News.
“A CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron has been tasked as part of a multi-agency response including the Canadian Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.”
